These are packages currently waiting in Debian's NEW queue, and I'm putting them up here for the very impatient (built for i386 and amd64 only).
Apt line:
deb http://www.larted.org.uk/~dom/debian/mapnik unstable/
If you do use these packages (either with the apt line or manually) please bear in mind that this repository will most likely not be updated with new versions. Therefore if you're patient you may be better off waiting for the packages to appear in Debian (at which point this bug will be closed).
The packages are now in Debian; please use them from there instead
